 | Tonight is our FIRST CLASS of The Artist Must Take Sides: Culture & The Movement Past, Present & Future - it’s not too late to sign up! Join now at peoplesforum.org/takesides
Our first class of the series with Claudia De La Cruz will dive into understanding art and culture within the context of society and the economy. It will examine how culture functions as a site of struggle — shaping consciousness, reinforcing or subverting dominant power, and offering possibilities for resistance. Drawing from historical and recent cultural production, we will explore how art and culture is not an isolated or purely individual pursuit, but rather it is a collective practice tied to material conditions. Together, we will build a shared language to understand culture not as separate from politics, but as one of its most contested battlegrounds. The question at the center: in whose interest, and for what purpose, do we produce art?

 | | Double Feature: Don't Let Me Be Long Little Bird & LA Rebellion: A Cinematic Movement ft. Reem Jubran 6:00PM Thursday, April 23
Don't Be Long, Little Bird (2025, 23m) follows a story of the daughter of a displaced Palestinian family, who accidentally finds herself time traveling to 1930s Palestine, where she spends a few days with her great-grandmother when she was her age.
LA Rebellion: A Cinematic Movement (2025, 56m) Following the Watts Uprising, UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television enacted affirmative action policies to increase enrollment of students of color in its film program — a group historically underrepresented in the student population. The “ethno-communications” initiative to recruit students from Black, Asian, Chicano and Native American communities became a movement known as "LA Rebellion." | |
